PVC: Properties and How to Specify a Sleeve
PVC is an amorphous thermoplastic polymerised from vinyl chloride — inherently flame-retardant and self-extinguishing, a good insulator, resistant to acids and alkalis, and inexpensive. It is the workhorse base material for sleeves. Its weakness is heat: ordinary grades are rated for continuous use only up to about 60 °C.
Five Jobs an Insulation Sleeve Does in an Electrical Connection
A sleeve looks like a small plastic part, but it simultaneously provides electrical insulation, mechanical cushioning, sealing against dust and moisture, resistance to aggressive media, and circuit identification. Specify the wrong material or size and any one of those five fails — and becomes a hidden risk.
PVC, Silicone or Rubber? Choosing a Sleeve Material
All three make good sleeves: PVC is cheap and flame-retardant, silicone has a very wide temperature range, and rubber excels in elasticity and oil resistance. The choice is not about which material is better — it is about operating temperature, contact media and assembly method.
An Introduction to Silicone Material
Silicone is a highly active adsorbent material and an amorphous substance whose main component is silicon dioxide. It does not dissolve in water or any solvent, is non-toxic and odourless, and is chemically stable — reacting with nothing except strong alkalis and hydrofluoric acid.
What Are the Advantages of Silicone Rubber?
Silicone rubber offers heat resistance, cold resistance, dielectric performance, ozone resistance and weathering resistance. Its standout property is a wide service temperature range — continuous use from -60 °C to +250 °C.
How Synthetic Rubber Is Made
Synthetic rubber production falls into three stages: monomer synthesis and purification, polymerisation, and rubber finishing. Purification typically uses distillation, washing and drying.
What Is Fluororubber?
Fluororubber is a synthetic high-polymer elastomer whose main or side chain carbon atoms carry fluorine. Introducing fluorine gives the rubber outstanding heat resistance, oxidation resistance, oil resistance and weathering resistance.
Inspection Standards for Rubber Parts
Every first moulding of each shift is visually inspected during vulcanisation, and finished goods are inspected 100% visually. Dimensional inspection takes place after vulcanisation and deflashing, following a 6-hour settling period.
